Durable Goods Continues to Archive in New Places

As promised Durable Goods has been working to find more venues to archive the zine. It takes lots of sifting and a bunch of hope, but it has been worth it. I think it is important to promote bookstores, libraries and any sort of print project especially in this age of technology. I am a big fan of advancements in technology and inventions that can bring us closer as people. I do however maintain a certain Victorian air to my character when it comes to books. There is something transformative when you read a book or poetry on the page than on the screen. I think by archiving the work of the writers in Durable Goods we retain some knowledge of the history we are presently creating in the small press.

Durable Goods Archived at the Floating Zine Collection at the University of Iowa

Last year I had made a campaign to get more universities to archive Durable Goods in an attempt to have more outlets for the DG writers. I did get some responses, but not as many as I had hoped. One day recently, I was doing a Google search and found that the University of Iowa had archived the issue I had sent them as a sample in their Floating Zine Collection! I had not heard back from them so I assumed they were not interested.

In light of this discovery, I will now be sending the University of Iowa a copy of each issue starting with Issue 48. It is my great pleasure to welcome the library of the University of Iowa to the Durable Goods Family.

Durable Goods Online Compilation 2009-2010

Durable Goods has celebrated over a year of success in the print zine world. It has traveled all over the world to nearly every continent and to most corners of the United States. There has been such a great outpouring of support for this zine and I truly appreciate it.

My long time friend Brian Fugett (Zygote in my Coffee) and I had discussed doing a print compilation of the first year of Durable Goods, but due to the sheer number of contributors and the actual size of the book it was decided it wasn't cost effective. I still wanted to commemorate this great year and also how much this zine has changed my life so, I decided to develop an online Issuu book that would feature all the poems, prose and photography from 2009-2010.

Durable Goods' main purpose is to bring joy back to the mailbox and make connections between different circles of writers and maybe give a few moments of respite in a day that is otherwise hectic and filled with business. I have had the best loyal subscribers and writers on the planet and I consider them an extended family. I have a great group of distributors who share my zine with their publications and folks that always spread the word. I am a lucky woman and editor.

On June 9th, 2011 you will be able to find the online compilation of Durable Goods 2009-2010 exclusively at Zygote in my Coffee. This will be the only place that you can view this, so please stop by there and support Zygote and Durable Goods. Brian Fugett has been an amazing friend and truly gave me my start in the small press as he was the first person to ever take a chance on my poetry. He is a great innovator, a wonderful guy and an integral part of the small press. Thank you Brian.

Issue 31 is the last in the present series of translation issues and I think we end it on a strong note. LaDonna Witmer is a stunning writer and visual artist from California who sculpts words with a sharp knife in the most delicate of ways. She is a maker of cinepoems (short films of her work) and has had me interested in her work since I saw the first one several years ago.

Claudia Bierschenk is the translator for this issue and her eagerness to get LaDonna's work just right impressed me. Claudia's own work is something that smacks you in the face and leaves you wondering where you have just been. She has appeared in Durable Goods previously and has received a nomination for that work for a Pushcart Prize.

In the future there will be more translation issues as offers to translate work into Italian and Polish have already come down the pike. Thank you for enjoying these diversions.

Durable Goods and the Denver Zine Library

Durable Goods is happy to announce (albeit a bit late) that they are now archived at The Denver Zine Library in Denver, Colorado. This is great news and just the sort of organization that we love to support. The DZL is volunteer run and not-for-profit.

They have over 10,000 zines from all over the world archived in their place and are open on the weekends and by appointment for folks to come in and read the zines. Once you are a regular....you can check zines out from the lending library. DZL also has community workshops, hosts local events and produces zine readings.

This is the second issue that features a translation of work into another language. The language of Brazil is Portuguese and this issue has a special place in my heart as the very first poem I ever had published in another language was in Portuguese. It was how I met Beto Palaio and how I struck up a curious friendship that in many ways, saved my life.

This issue features the marvelous work of Annie Menebroker who is not only an amazing female writer, but a humble one as well. In the beginning I was unsure she would be willing to donate her work and I was beyond thrilled that she did. Her poem is a touching remembrance that speaks volumes in English and glides along in Portuguese.

Beto Palaio is a wonderful man and a writer who is always trying to push the boundaries of his own work. He works tirelessly at learning English and brings a special enthusiasm to the table. He loves art and beauty and words and it is my pleasure to also feature two of his poems in this issue.

This is also a limited run of 100.

This issue marks a new milestone for Durable Goods as it is a double issue. The production for this was extensive, but well worth it. I wanted to feature a longer piece of work by a writer and give that writer the joy of having their work translated into another language. I am so very lucky to know bilingual writers who are willing to donate their talents to make this project happen. As a thank you for their skills, I also featured their work in both English and their native language.

Issue 29 features a brillant and tortured poem from James H. Duncan that reads as well in French as it does in English. Nadine Sellers is a writer and musician originally from France and has been featured in Durable Goods in the very beginning of this adventure and it is my honor to be able to share more of her work with you. The photographs featured in this issue are also from Nadine Sellers.

Hello Durable Goods family! I was talking with a perspective writer the other day and he mentioned that it might be good to check out The Toronto Zine Library as another home for Durable Goods to live. I am so thrilled about sharing all of the featured writers work wherever I can. I sent an inquiry to Patrick at TZL and he was more than happy to add my lit zine to the mix.

Toronto Zine Library is home to countless zines from all over the world that range from perzine and punk fanzines, art/lit zines, comics, humour and politics and zines with gender issues as the main topic. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that larger family? Buffalo Small Press Book Fair

In March, Durable Goods and Zygote in my Coffee teamed up to have a table at the Buffalo Small Press Book Fair. It was a bustling event filled with great books, art, comics and performances. The city of Buffalo really turns out for this small press fair. This had been the second year of this that I had attended though the first time was just as a bystander. This year my daughter and I braved the crowds and sold some books for Zygote in my Coffee and spread the word about Durable Goods. It was nice to meet people and talk about the great things going on with these two publications. Thanks Brian at Zygote for sending all the beautiful books and for your continued support of Durable Goods.

Durable Goods and the University of Buffalo's "Little Magazines" Archive

By some stroke of luck, the University of Buffalo's Poetry Collection received a few copies of Durable Goods. This prompted Brenda Battleson to contact me about placing the entire Durable Goods collection in their "Little Magazines" archives. If you don't know about this collection then you are missing out on something amazing. They store over 5,000 different magazines from all over and in varying styles and content. Some of the images above are covers from their collection. This is a very special honor for me to be able to have the writers I feature have their work stored in an esteemed collection at a university. It is a great opportunity to be read by so many different audiences than one might have access to.

The Giving Spirit

Today I received a lovely holiday card from one of Durable Goods biggest supporters and inside was a touching poem, a check for a subscription and a book of stamps. Michael Solender is a generous person both as a friend and as a fellow writer. He continually supports small press writers and lifts their work up by displaying them on his blog and encouraging them to think outside the box. I admire that about him because I have similar thoughts and feelings about writing. It is an individual adventure when we create a piece of fiction or a poem, but it is a community gift that reaches the borders of the world and has no limits on how much it can touch another person. Michael's encouragement of others is commendable and in light of this, I am going to use the book of stamps that he sent to give one of my readers a year's subscription who I know cannot afford to get one, but who is a humble supporter and shining human being.

Wonder Twins Activate........

Recently, I sent a copy of Durable Goods to my fearless editor Brian Fugett at Zygote in my Coffee. He was enamored with my little microzine and asked if he could have a few more issues to put in a large mailing of the upcoming Issue #7/Ross Vassilev Flipbook. I said sure and sent him 40 copies. In further discussion, he decided that he wanted to spread DG around in everything he mails and he will soon be displaying the DG logo on Zygote in my Coffee's main website.

I think this is a wonderful thing for many reasons. I love that Brian believes in grassroots projects and things made with heart. He is an amazing book maker and does it in his home while juggling life and fatherhood. He puts out quality product that people around the world enjoy. Also, I think this benefits the writers by having a larger market than I employ at the moment. I will still be sending out my copies by mail as intended and this pairing with Zygote in my Coffee is the whipped cream on the sundae.

Hello fine readers! As with many others in the world, sometimes our lives get taken down to a creative zero and from those times we rise with new ideas. Durable Goods is one of those times. I wanted to do something in print; something small and portable; something clean and about the writing. This micro-zine features very small poems and pieces of microfiction from writers around the world. Presently it is by invitation only.

I send each of the contributors 10 copies of their issue and then randomly send 12 more copies about in the world. If you feel like you need one, you can email me at windwitch27@yahoo.com and I will send you a copy. This zine is about supporting writers in an intimate way, about sharing work I feel is strong in one way or another.
